Tequila is the fermented juice from the aguave plant whose origins are with the Aztec people who used it as a ritual drink by priests, heroes and sacrifice victims.
According to legend, lightning struck some aguave plants which made the plant give a aromatic and tasty sweet juice which when extracted and fermented produced a feeling of well being. It was considered a gift from the gods, and the ancient people continued to reproduce the liquid.
Today nearly 16 million gallons are produced annually. Only Tequila made in the state of Jalisco can bear the title TEQUILA. Almost the entire amount of Mexico's famous liqueur is distilled in the city of Tequila near Guadalajara.
