Fredy's Tucan An all-time breakfast and lunch classic in town that could not be otherwise since it's the restaurant of Posada de Roger Hotel, a local institution since 1961! Nevertheless, Fredy's Tucan wasn't opened 20 years ago. Efficiently run by the ever-smiling Fredy García Acevedo, the attentive staff buzzes around carrying trays with eye-catching goodies and aromatic coffee. The place features three different seating areas, the front room, the room beside the bar (with both air conditioning and non-smoking sections) and my favorite, the central patio, under a sheltering roof with many plants. The restaurant overlooks Restaurant Row (Basilio Badillo), which offers live entertainment such as people watching. A man next to me treats himself to a Black Forest, an impressive pile of fluffy pancakes covered with chocolate syrup topped with fresh strawberries, whipped cream and pecans (they feature 11 different pancake options). Drinking my grapefruit juice, I decide not to go for eggs (although their eight omelet varieties are tempting–like Florentino, a house favorite with fresh shrimp and spinach bathed in hollandaise sauce). I take my chance with a Campesino Breakfast, a huge plate combining beef steak with chilaquiles (sliced, fried tortillas cooked in a spicy tomato sauce topped with cheese) and refried beans, which makes me think that after this breakfast, I can skip lunch and have a light dinner!
