Not to be confused with bananas, their sweeter and smaller counterparts, plantains are a staple food in many tropical regions of the world. Unlike bananas, they are seldom eaten raw, and it’s not uncommon to find them in savory dishes, such as Cuban-style rice, served with fried plantains on the side. “Platanos machos,” as they are often referred to locally, are equally delicious as a dessert, and in Puerto Vallarta, it’s not unusual to find one or two carts along the Malecon extension serving this delicious treat. They are often garnished with fresh strawberries, mangoes or other seasonal fruits and sweetened with jam and condensed milk, a perfect accompaniment for an afternoon stroll along Puerto Vallarta’s popular promenade!
