There are a few instances in the world of gastronomy wherethe combination of a minimal number of ingredients results in an unexpectedly delicious treat. Such is the case with the michelada, a popular Mexican beverage made by combining cold beer with freshly squeezed lime juice. Popular throughout Mexico, micheladas are served with ice cubes in a chilled, salt-rimmed glass, in just about any bar or restaurant. Variations include a variety of sauces and spices, such as Worcestershire sauce.
Curiously enough, the name of the drink is not standardized. In some areas, asking for a michelada results in the basic, sauce- and spice-free drink, whereas a chelada includes the extra ingredients. In other areas, the results are the opposite. Regardless, a chilled michelada is a perfect thirst-quenching alternative to either a plain cold beer or a lemonade any time of the year.
