Slow Food is finally gaining speed in Banderas Bay. Founded in 1989, Slow Food (www.slowfood.com) is an international, non-profit, eco-gastronomic, member-supported organization whose goal is to counteract fast food and fast life. The organization also concerns itself with the disappearance of local food traditions, along with people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes, and how our food choices affect the rest of the world.
There are over 1,000 convivia (Slow Food lingo for chapters) all over the world, including over a dozen throughout Mexico. The local one, spearheaded by a small group of local restaurant owners and foodies, is called Convivio Bahia de Banderas and covers the states of Jalisco, Colima and Nayarit. The organizers have been slowly (pun intended) following the necessary steps to formalize the local chapter, which anyone can join by paying a membership fee.
To raise awareness, Convivio Bahia de Banderas will initially focus on dining and wine pairing events to take place at local restaurants, open to anyone (with discounted prices for members). Local and/or regional products will be featured at all these events, and at least one of the products will be featured in each dish served, one of the prerequisites for an official Slow Food event.
