While fish tacos are not as widespread in Mexico’s inland cities and towns, they are quite popular at sea-level destinations such as Puerto Vallarta. There is anthropologic evidence that tacos filled with small fish were part of the pre-Hispanic diet. However, it is generally held that fish tacos as we know them today originated in Baja California, where they usually consist of a small piece of lightly battered, deep-fried fish served in a corn tortilla with shredded cabbage, a mayonnaise-based sauce and a bit of lime juice for extra zest. Variations of this humble treat are as diverse as the venues where you might enjoy them. Below are a few local favorites.
