Here are the newbies! Thirteen restaurants are participating for the very first time in this year’s edition of Restaurant Week, offering foodies all over the bay excellent reasons to try out new restaurants and explore their enticing discounted menus, May 15 - 31. We present seven of them here, and wrap up our Countdown to Restaurant Week series next week.
Small in size but huge in culinary scope, Bistro Teresa ($299 pesos) has been quietly (and steadily!) garnering devotees in Puerto Vallarta’s Amapas, Conchas Chinas and South Shore neighborhoods, and for good reason. Anyone in these neighborhoods looking for outstanding cuisine, a great sunset view and an intimate atmosphere can find it in Bistro Teresa without even driving into town. And for the rest of us, it is a welcome change of pace. (We’re truly excited about their Stuffed Chicken Breast with tamarind mole sauce main course!)
Another new kid in the South Shore block, Boca DOS Stk Bites & Meats ($299 pesos) is located within the Garza Blanca Resort & Spa. While Blanca Blue, its older sibling, is renowned for outstanding gastronomy and a sophisticated ambiance, Boca DOS aims for a more casual atmosphere. Beef lovers may particularly enjoy their 5 oz. Rib Eye cooked on a wood fire, and with its elevated location, the restaurant promises a delightful view of the sunset.
Bombay Brasserie ($189 pesos) is also relatively new in town, a small eatery in Marina Vallarta (at Nima Bay) offering outstanding Indian cuisine. It’s owners have repeatedly advised that reservations are strongly recommended as the place is rather small. At the same time, we’ve heard enough praise about the venue from local foodies, such that we understand the recommendation. (We’re very intrigued about their Palak Paneer, a unique homemade cheese served in curried spinach.
The Westin Resort & Spa in Marina Vallarta remains one of the most beautiful resorts in our destination, with lush grounds and architectural design truly representative of contemporary Mexico. In this backdrop, El Palmar ($299 pesos), one of their flagship restaurants, will offer an eclectic menu that includes (and yes, we’re somewhat partial to them) a Chicken Breast stuffed with goat cheese, with pepper ragout and couscous-mint-mango salad.
A new addition in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is El Violli, and their Restaurant Week $299 pesos menu is as intriguing as it gets, and not for the faint-hearted! One of their entrees, a Tuna Sashimi with serrano vinaigrette, is served over a guacamole-cricket flauta. Indeed, foodies should be advised that chapulines, or crickets, are a delicacy, commonly eaten in certain parts of Mexico, and most widely consumed in the state of Oaxaca. Their Avocado Pudding with white chocolate mousse dessert reminds us of the versatility of this Mexican treasure, but we may have to return in order to sample one of their other two desserts, Ice Cream Cones with epazote (a pungent herb commonly used in Mexican cuisine, berries, anise and lemongrass.
India Gate ($189 pesos), another new restaurant in town, has also raised eyebrows, not only for their affordable prices and authentic cooking styles. One of their signature cocktails, a Ginger Martini, is so memorable, it has been previously featured in our website. Several favorites are included in their Restaurant Week menu, such as Samosas, Lamb Vindaloo and Kheer, a traditional rice-based dessert cooked with milk and almonds.
Definitely not new in the local scene, but certainly never old as far as its following and reputation are concerned, La Bodeguita del Medio ($189 pesos) is an excellent addition to Restaurant Week. The ambiance at this Cuban restaurant enough will build your appetite! It’s location along Puerto Vallarta’s Malecon is as good as it gets. And its unique recessing roof allows for dining under the stars and dancing your heart out when their live band performs traditional salsa and other caribbean rhythms. Their Ropa Vieja (literally “old clothes”) is a traditional dish that everyone must try.
We have six more new restaurants to go and are less than a week for the eight annual edition of Vallarta Lifestyles’ Restaurant Week to begin!
