On Assignment: Danza del Venado

Published Jul 9, 2009 - (Updated Aug 13, 2012)

We've had a lot of fun featuring traditional Mexican attires in several issues of Costa Vallarta Luxury Living Magazine. So far, the series has included a bullfighter ("Dressed to Kill") a folk dancer ("Dressed to Dance") and "Dressed to Dance," where we featured a local Mariachi singer. For the upcoming issue, we decided to learn more about the traditional Yaqui Dance of the Deer, often performed in Vallarta Adventures' "Rhythms of the Night" and other similar venues. It is aptly named "Dressed to Die" for the dance consists of a deer being hunted by two Indians, eventually succumbing to their sharp spears. The following video features insights on the dance by Ramsés Cruz, one of the select dancers in town that expertly perform this dance on a regular basis.
