Located just north of Puerto Vallarta's International Airport, Boca de Tomates is ideal for when you want to get away from the maddening crowd and see more crocodiles, sea turtles and exotic birds than sun worshippers. The Tomates estuary is one of this area's most important refuges for wildlife, this long wide sandy beach in front of the airport an ecologist's paradise. Lots of funky palapa restaurants. Popular with boogie boarders. Additionally, it's a great place to sample "pescado sarandeado," or grilled fresh fish, a local specialty.

What you should know

  • About half an hour north of Puerto Vallarta by public bus, private car or taxi
  • Public access by foot from inside Marina Vallarta is on the north side of the golf course; take a right
  • Don't miss checking out what are literally 15-feet- or-more 'gators!
