“I’m going a thousand miles an hour,” says Omar Alonso on any given Tuesday, as he readies his gallery for the weekly Wednesday Old Town Art Walk. Across the street at Galerie des Artistes Galerie des Artistes, which he also oversees, preparations are underway for an art show opening to take place the following day. If one could visualize both art galleries as the two sides of a tennis court, one might find Omar Alonso gracefully jumping across the net, playing both sides of the court at the same time without missing a single stroke.
Alonso’s history with Puerto Vallarta’s art scene goes back 10 years, when he joined Galerie des Artistes. Five years later, he recognized photography as a medium that was increasingly gaining respectability, but lacking a proper space to showcase it. Galería Omar Alonso Galeria Omar Alonso was created to meet this growing need. A trendsetter from the get-go, he has selected only the finest photographers from Mexico and worldwide, meticulously curating their work and paying close attention to every detail of their exhibitions.
And the art world has been paying attention. The Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD), an organization dedicated to creating and maintaining high standards in the business of exhibiting, buying and selling photographs as art, spends up to 10 years observing the development of new galleries, sending both clients and prospective artists to them, before inviting any given one to become a new member. Galería Omar Alonso recently received such an invitation.
World-renowned photographer Wouter Deruytter, who began exhibiting with Omar in 2003 “more as a gesture of friendship,” says, “Showing with him has become very important to my career. And with every passing year I meet more and more people all over the world who are talking about his gallery with great respect.”
