Adriana Quinto has always been a dancer

Originally from Xalapa, Veracruz, Adriana Quinto has always been a dancer. “I remember seeing a performance by Solange Lebourges (principal dancer of Mexico’s Ballet Teatro del Espacio dance company, now defunct) as a child. I was mesmerized.” Quinto was drawn to Puerto Vallarta seven years ago by the Centro Universitario de la Costa, the local branch of Guadalajara’s state university, while in the middle of a production of Bizet’s Carmen for Guanajuato’s acclaimed Festival Internacional Cervantino. “The immediacy of nature reminded me of home.”

Upon arrival, she set out to teach dance and build her own dance company, perhaps best known for Frida, a theatrical/dance production of her own creation that celebrates the life of Mexican icon Frida Kahlo. Fusing contemporary and traditional dance and music with theater, the result was a powerful, spiritual statement. “It started with a 10-minute performance I did four years ago for a local film festival,” she recalls. “It was very successful.” Based on feedback and following her heart, she developed the piece, transforming it into a sophisticated production that now involves an entire dance company, multiple costume changes, actors, musicians and singers. A successful three-month run at Teatro Vallarta helped consolidate the piece further, increasing its appeal among theater and dance performance enthusiasts.

“Works of art have a life of their own. Sometimes, they leave; sometimes, they come back,” she mused when asked about Frida’s constant evolution. “This helps people get closer to art in dance and other expressions, an absolute must in the world we live in today.”
