Serving the CommunityL Unity is a central theme in the community service projects organized by Molly Fisher of P.E.A.C.E. (Protection Education Animals Culture & Environment), the acronym working in both Spanish and English. It stands to reason that Molly, bilingual herself, would create an organization that bridges languages, cultures, ideas and social systems. Believing in education as the primary tool for empowerment, she encourages people to “think outside of the box,” pointing out one of the drawbacks in a state-run educational system.
From the time her progressive mother punished her at age 10 by requiring weekly involvement in a bowling program for handicapped children, Molly was hooked. As a high school teacher in Colorado, observing the marginalization of Spanish-speaking youth, she was intrigued to learn the language. It was her life on Isla Mujeres that brought the focus to local issues and began her on the path to becoming a functional member of the community.
In less than 10 years, Molly has created a grassroots organization that recognizes divergent needs. Beginning with animals, an aggressive campaign works to provide spay and neuter clinics throughout rural communities. While some complain about drastic increases in migrant workers in the construction industry, Molly created a program to provide constructive activities on evenings and weekends, normally dedicated to family time. After-school programs focus on affording children tools necessary for analytical reasoning, while offering their mothers programs and classes for financial subsistence and self-empowerment. “It allows the mothers to be involved and even produce a little independent income outside the home.”
