Making Wishes Come True
Most of us have a lifetime to fulfill our dreams. For children whose existence is threatened by a terminal disease, however, the window of opportunity is small at best, and often reduced further by a family’s limited financial resources. Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the seemingly impossible is realized daily, in order to engender fragile lives with a sense of hope and joy.
Since opening an affiliate office nearly five years ago in Puerto Vallarta, CEO Bob Mandel, who founded the national office, and his hardworking staff/board have granted more than 400 wishes to children at risk. Make-A-Wish does whatever it takes to grant kids’ special requests, but was recently challenged by a child’s interest in meeting “Mr. Wish.” With some quick thinking, however, the team produced a living, breathing wizard (with an uncanny resemblance to the organization’s charismatic CEO). Garbed in a star-strewn cape and hat, Bob mysteriously appeared tableside while eight-year-old Valentina and her family dined on the beach, compliments of the Westin Regina Hotel. Presenting her with his magical wand, Mr. Wish apprised her of its magical powers, which ultimately produced the opportunity to swim with the dolphins.
Though some wishes seem more unique than others, each is special, invariably producing a child transformed by the thrill of a dream come true. To personally adopt a child’s wish, make a donation, recommend a potential recipient or serve in a volunteer capacity, please call Make-A-Wish at 222-9111.
