The Puerto Vallarta Youth Orchestra, under the direction of maestro Miguel Almaguer, has just announced their winter concert, to take place this Sunday, January 19, in Teatro Vallarta. The performance will feature introductory lectures at 11 am and will commence at noon.

The concert will feature, among other pieces, the world premiere of maestro Almaguer’s concerto for horn and orchestra, featuring Omar Romero as soloist. Romero is one of the school’s advanced students. The orchestra will also perform an adaptation of the original score for the film The Night of the Iguana (composed by Benjamin Frankel), which was possible when Almaguer contacted the late composer’s family. He subsequently received the original score from them and created the adaptation for a special 50-year anniversary celebration for the film that took place at the local Guadalajara University campus. Works by Jean Sibelius, Astor Piazzola and Camille Saint-Saëns will also be performed.

Vallarta Lifestyles Managing Editor, Paco Ojeda, will offer a free introductory lecture on the works to be performed prior to the concert, at 11 and 11:30 am in English and Spanish, respectively. A musician himself, Ojeda is known to many for his introductory opera lectures at Teatro Vallarta prior to the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts.

Tickets for the concert are $100 pesos, general admission, $50 pesos for children, students with ID, orchestra members and seniors. Tickets are available at Teatro Vallarta, through TicketMaster and at the Youth Orchestra campus in Pitillal.
