Aiming to develop Puerto Vallarta into a floral and cultural festival destination, the Bugambilia Festival returns for its sophomore edition May 9 - 11. Not only are local bougainvilleas in full blossom at this time, the festival also ties in with Mother’s Day weekend. Organized by the Vallarta Garden Club, this year’s event features a variety of activities in which the bougainvillea, a genus of thorny ornamental vines with beautiful, multi-colored flowers, becomes the backdrop.

Organizers hope that, in time, the festival will grow to join other May festivals, such as Vallarta Lifestyles’ Restaurant Week, as strong tourism generators for the destination. For several years, Vallarta Garden Club volunteers have planted hundreds of bougainvilleas in popular spots, including Basilio Badillo St. and the city’s scenic Malecón. With time, the plantings have grown, contributing dramatic visual impact to their surroundings.
