Saturday, July 26, will be a special day at the Vallarta Botanical Gardens, with the dedication of the main stairway of the soon-to-be opened Vallarta Conservatory of Mexican Orchids. The dedication will be in memory of Mexican orchid researcher Roberto González Tamayo (1940-2014), who dedicated much of his life as a professor with the Guadalajara University Institute of Botany.

The event, which starts at noon, will bring together family, friends and colleagues of Mr. González, along with the general public, who will take in the magnificent new research facility, scheduled for completion later this month. A hand painted memorial tile will be installed and words will be shared in celebration of the botanist’s life, the significance of Mexican orchids, and the importance of their conservation and public display. Gonzalez’ fieldwork resulted in the discovery of several new species, especially in the orchid family, along with subsequent appearances in several scholarly publications.

Complimentary punch and cookies will be served following the event, which is free to those who bring a printed entry ticket, which can be obtained at botanical.interticket.com/search.php, with the following coupon code: 26jul14gonz. Considered one of Puerto Vallarta's most important attractions, the Vallarta Botanical Gardens is popular with locals and visitors, for its immediacy to the city and for providing access to the region’s varied tropical flora and fauna.
