Local Artists Yesika Felix, Ireri Topete, Fernando Sanchez and Sergio Martínez, also known as the Colectivo “La Malagua”, have created a collective exhibition called “La Loteria” which honors the Mexican style of bingo (la loteria). This show runs from September 30 - October 24, 2008 in the Latino Arts Auditorium, in Milwaukee, WI. A special opening reception will be held on Friday, October 10, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM and will be followed by a performance from Sammy Figueroa and His Latin Jazz Explosion.
The gallery is displaying a number of loteria game boards with series of prints by La Malagua, created using a tortilla press. These prints are representative of the Mexican bingo game's iconography. The artists' cultural perspectives regarding the imagery utilized in the loteria is represented with an authenticity characteristic of the artists' reflections on Mexican society.
La Malagua was born as a collective group in 1999 and the production of some lotería cards was one of their first projects. They where very young and upcoming artists living at Puerto Vallarta, starting to use etching as an aesthetic tool, but then decided then to approach the project using xylography. At that time, every member of the group worked each plate so they managed to create a homogeneous and clean exhibit. This new exercise on the “lotería” by La Malagua, delivers a much more personal map with an iconography that reveals the character of every member of the collective.
Congratulations to these talented Vallarta artists!
