TripAdvisor, the popular travel opinion website, has just announced their 2013 Travelers’ Choice Awards. How did Mexico in general and Banderas Bay in particular fare? We scoured through all the categories and cut to the chase for you! Chosen by millions of travelers, the results from TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards have become a sought-after measurement for hotels and destinations, worldwide.
To review all the results in all categories, worldwide, visit TripAdvisor’s website. We’ve gone ahead and highlighted all the results related to Mexico and Banderas Bay, below. Unfortunately, not all is rosy for Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit. As travel destinations become more competitive, worldwide, it becomes increasingly challenging for them to maintain their place at the table. And Banderas Bay is no exception. As you will see, some of our hotels did great. Our beaches, not so much.
Top 25 Destinations—World
No Mexico destinations made the cut. Paris got first place. And given the recent announcement by the World Tourism Organization that Mexico slid beyond the top ten most visited countries in the world—a fact vehemently denied by Mexican officials during the latter part of ex-president Felipe Calderón's government), new Tourism Secretary Claudia Ruiz Massieu clearly has her work cut out for herself! (Mexico is now the 13th most visited country in the world, according to the World Tourism Organization.)
Top 10 Destinations in Mexico
Cancún got first place, Puerto Vallarta got fourth.
Top 25 Hotels in Mexico
Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit are very well represented here, with The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort on third place, Casa Velas in Puerto Vallarta on sixth, Marival Residences & World Spa and Villa La Estancia in Nuevo Vallarta on seventh and eighth, respectively, Four Seasons Punta Mita in 14th, and Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit on 24th place. That’s six hotels out of 25!
Top 10 Hotels for Romance
Casa Velas in Puerto Vallarta got eighth place.
Top 10 Hotels for Families
No Puerto Vallarta or Riviera Nayarit hotels made this category. So much for marketing our destination as a family friendly one! Given the enormous popularity of this poll, hotel owners, city officials and tourism bureaus in Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit would do well to take note on this matter.
Top 10 Beaches in Mexico
Nuevo Vallarta Beach got fourth place. And that’s it! This trend is likely to continue slipping and sliding as long as local authorities continue to bicker about things, such as licensed or unlicensed beach vendors, instead of focusing on cleanliness, improved public facilities and access.
