While production companies such as Act II Entertainment are raising the bar as far as live entertainment for the English-speaking local community is concerned during the Winter and Spring seasons, similar projects, in Spanish, are busy improving their own productions. Dionisio, a fairly new Spanish-only theater collective just celebrated their first-year anniversary with important awards.
Their most recent production, La Ley del Ranchero, directed by Juan Carlos Ramírez, received third prize in the 16th Encuentro de Teatro del Interior, an important state-wide theater competition. Other awards included Best Costume and Best Supporting Role for Cesar Trujillo.
The competition took place in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, and was organized by the state’s Secretary of Culture. “The competition was a great learning opportunity,” commented director Juan Carlos Ramírez. “As an actor, it allows us to challenge ourselves with broader possibilities. And spending time with other theater groups is invaluable to better understand how they work, and how to apply new techniques to our very own craft.”
Prior to the competition, La Ley del Ranchero was staged in Puerto Vallarta for two months at the Isla Río Cuale Cultural Center, along with two shows at the CECATUR Auditorium as part of Melissa Castillo’s successful Cartelera Escénica stage and concert series that regularly takes place at said auditorium during Fall, Winter and Spring months. The cast of La Ley del Ranchero includes Cesar Trujillo, Alejandro Lamas, Juan Carlos Ramírez, Oliver Michelena, Nohelia Vázquez, Samantha Dueñas, Rafael Reyes, Omaraico Lucian, José Manuel Cervantes, and Vallarta Lifestyles’ very own Juan Pablo Hernández. As part of the competition process, La Ley del Ranchero will be scheduled in Guadalajara in the near future.
