Puerto Vallarta Visits Sister City Highland Park

Published Aug 27, 2013, 3:35pm -

Puerto Vallarta city officials visited sister city Highland Park, IL during the weekend of August 24. During the brief but activity-intensive visit, the group enjoyed Taste, of Highland Park, a cultural festival, and toured the local high school, library and health clinic. Principal Greg Swanson, led an extensive tour of the high school highlighting a mural painted by Puerto Vallarta artist, Javier Nino, and two benches recently painted in memory of one of the members of the Highland Park Sister Cities Foundation, Jim Rosenbaum. The benches were painted during Focus on the Arts last April by Puerto Vallarta’s Ada Colorina and students from the High School.

The group also participated in a joint sister cities meeting held at the Botanic Gardens on Sunday morning and the visit was concluded at the Chicago concert at Ravinia on Sunday night.  The guests from Puerto Vallarta included the president of the Puerto Vallarta Sister Cities Committee, the director of education, the director of tourism and an advisor to the Mayor of Puerto Vallarta.

The President of Puerto Vallarta's Sister Cities Committee was presented with a key to the city of Highland Park and Mayor Rotering was given a small replica of the whale sculpture that graces Sister Cities park in downtown Highland Park.  The high school was given a gift of a Huichol Jaguar hand-made by the Huichol Indians of Puerto Vallarta.

Highland Park is a suburban municipality in Lake County, Illinois, United States, about 23 miles (37 km) north of downtown Chicago. The town was founded in 1869 with a population of 500. It features several important attractions, including a vibrant downtown shopping district and the Ravinia Festival, an open-air pavilion seating 3,200, which hosts classical, pop and jazz concerts in the summer.
