Looking for a new, iconic landmark, the town of Bucerías and the municipality of Bahía de Banderas announced a brand new bronze sculpture that was installed in the town’s oceanfront boardwalk on Saturday, August 2. The sculpture of a diver, celebrates the town’s humble origins. Meaning “a place for divers,” Bucerías was founded half a century ago by families that made a living through diving and fishing. The work is a joint creation by Octavio González and Luis Armando Solorio. González is renowned for his iconic whale sculpture at the entrance of Marina Vallarta.
The sculpture, which can be seen from the highway as one enters the town, is part of a larger improvement project currently taking place in the main plaza. Presently, a new outdoor amphitheater is almost complete, along with a wider median along the main road that features large planters and comfortable seating areas.
Finishing details around the sculpture monument are still in progress, and it is expected that the work will not be officially inaugurated until the month of November with a celebration that will allow for additional funds to be raised for the sculpture, which up until now, has been financed through private loans and donations. More information can be obtained by contacting the artist directly.
