La Donna e Mobile... In Vegas?

Published Feb 5, 2013, 4:42pm - (Updated Feb 6, 2013, 4:38pm)

Looking at this photograph of a recent rehearsal of the Metropolitan Opera’s brand new production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto, you might feel inclined to say “I don’t believe we’re in Mantua anymore.” Indeed, through director Michael Mayer’s imaginative vision, the action time-warps from Mantua in the Sixteenth century to Sinatra-style Las Vegas razzle-dazzle.

Billed informally as “the Rat Pack Rigoletto” the new production of Verdi’s masterpiece has been nodded favorably by New York critics and will be screened locally on Saturday, February 16, at noon, in Teatro Vallarta, as part of The MET: Live in HD series. As in past screenings, Vallarta Lifestyles’ Managing Editor, Paco Ojeda, will offer a free introductory lecture at 10:40 am, in the theater mezzanine.

Rigoletto was premiered on March 11, 1851 to a sold-out audience and remains one the Italian composer’s most memorable masterpieces, featuring memorable melodies, such as La donna è mobile, arguably his most popular. The Met’s new production, set in the 1960’s is without a doubt one of the season’s most accessible for audiences old and new.

Tickets for Rigoletto are $250 pesos per person, available at Teatro Vallarta’s box office, or through Ticketmaster. Teatro Vallarta is located at Uruguay 184, El Centro. The reminder of this season’s MET screenings are listed here.
