Members and sponsors gathered at the Vallarta Botanical Gardens on Sunday, June 6, helmets on hand, to participate in the ground-breaking ceremony for the Mexican Orchid Conservatory construction, the first of its kind in the entire country. “Mexico is the third-most bio-diverse country in the world,” commented Bob Price, founder and curator of the Gardens. “With over 1500 native Mexican orchid species, our new conservatory will become a national landmark.” Thanks to a 2007 grant from the American Orchid Society, the Vallarta Botanical Gardens conducted a first-ever census of native orchid species in the area. Fifty-six unique species were identified within a five-mile radius of the Gardens, confirming the location is ideal for housing the new orchid collection. Construction is expected to conclude before the end of 2010, and the Gardens are still actively seeking donations for this important project.
