Beverly Rose, An Unstoppable Mover and Shaker is Gone

Published May 27, 2008, 4:00pm - (Updated Nov 28, 2011, 5:19pm)

Beverly Rose, a Vallarta icon, passed away on March 5, 2008, just shy of her 78th birthday. She will be dearly missed by the many people whose lives she touched over her 17 years in our city. Norma Schuh, founder of the QuedaDivas, described her friend Beverly Rose as being "unstoppable, a mover and a shaker, and someone who lived her her life as a feisty woman."

Rose had an illustrious theatrical past. Highlights include, studying opera in Italy for five years, appearing as a popular USO guest performer, and also sharing her talents as a college theater teacher and director for nine years, at the Porterville College in Porterville, CA. Over the years, Rose was involved in numerous theatrical productions, taking on many roles including acting, set design, lighting and casting.

Theater goers in Vallarta flocked to her many local productions including “Sylvia”, “The Man Who Came to Dinner” and “An Evening With Tennessee Williams”. Rose donated the proceeds of her productions to local charities and her initiatives made a significant impact on the lives of many.

One of Rose’s innovative projects, was her unofficial role of Mrs. Santa Claus. She would purchase, gather and wrap gifts throughout the year and then on Christmas Day, she would dress in costume and become Mrs. Claus. In addition, she inspired and recruited others to dress as Santa and the elves and would surprise needy local children, by appearing in their colonias and distributing gifts to them. Although Rose received some donations for this project, she funded most of this initiative herself and delighted in purchasing and wrapping these gifts, knowing that they would be a wonderful surprise for some deserving local children, who otherwise may not have had a special present to open on Christmas Day. Another local charity that Rose supported, was Pasitos de Luz, which is an organization to assist the handicapped.

A memorial to the amazing Beverly Rose will be held in April. Details will be posted on the Events Calendar section of www.virtualvallarta.com as soon as they become available.
