Colectika, Puerto Vallarta’s only art gallery focused on Mexico’s finest folkloric artists, has announced three events for the coming months. This is no small task, given the fact that owner Kevin Simpson brings to Puerto Vallarta some of the finest artists they represent, often traveling from remote villages in Mexico, so Colectika visitors can have direct contact with these creators, thus providing a unique cultural opportunity for collectors interested in Mexico’s vast and varied folkloric art world.

The first event, to take place on January 30, will feature Julia Fuentes and her husband, J. Juan Melchor, from San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca (left). The couple return to Puerto Vallarta after a successful event during which they demonstrated—as they will again—their traditional wood carving techniques. A graduate of Mexico’s Fine Arts Institute, Oaxaca campus, Julia will also e showing a select number of her acrylic paintings as well.

On February 6, Colectika will showcase the most recent paintings by Juan Aguilar Sántiz, known in the art world as Juan Chawuk (center). Originally from Margaritas, Chiapas, the artist has recently completed an installation for the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, as well as two murals for schools in Chicago and Kansas. A special bonus for this particular show will be Carlos Tortolero, founder and director of Chicago's National Museum of Mexican Art, who will be on hand to help curate Chawuk’s works.

On February 27, Jacobo and Maria Angeles (right), also from San Martín Tilcajete, return to Colectika to demonstrate their traditional wood carving techniques along with the use of natural paints and pigments. Inspired by the traditional Zapotec codices that covered pyramids like Monte Alban, their pieces are covered in an intricate myriad of symbols that tell a story.  Jacobo and Maria’s work is on display at museums and galleries around the world, including the Smithsonian Native American Museum, and is probably the most sought after by collectors around the world today.

Colectika is conveniently located at the corner of Guadalupe Sánchez and Allende, in Puerto Vallarta’s El Centro, less than three blocks away from the Malecón. The opportunity to connect on a personal basis with the actual creators of some of Mexico’s most prominent folkloric art is highly recommended.
