30 down, 137 to go. That is the number of highway kilometers already finished and waiting to be constructed in order to reach completion of the shortened toll highway from Jala, Nayarit, to Puerto Vallarta. This was recently announced by Federico Días Avalos, Nayarit’s delegate for Mexico’s Communications and Transportations Secretary. With over ten years on the drawing board, the possibility of a shortened route from Guadalajara to Puerto Vallarta is finally moving forward thanks to municipal, state and federal initiatives.
While the final route has not been made public, it has been emphasized that there is an expectation to promote the entire region with the new highway. For example, there will be an exit 13 km. from Compostela, another 3 km away from Las Varas, one 2 km away from Guayabitos and one only 1.5 km away from Bucerías, thus facilitating access along the toll highway to these destinations and their vicinities.
Government officials are reluctant to provide further details, particularly as they relate to the actual project completion date. But it is anticipated that, once completed, the new highway will attract larger numbers of tourists to the region, originating in several inland states, not to mention Mexico City.
