Approximately 300 capoeira enthusiasts will gather in San Pancho, Riviera Nayarit, for the first Capoeira Festival to take place in this popular oceanfront destination. Originally created in Brazil in the beginning of the 16th century, mainly by descendants of African slaves with Brazilian native influences, capeoira is a Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, sports and music. It is known by quick and complex moves, using mainly kicks and quick leg sweeps, with some ground and aerial acrobatics.
The Capoeira Festival will feature courses and workshops for children and adults, along with opportunities for participants to socialize. The event will be headquartered at the entreAmigos Community Center. A highlight event will be a community class to take place at the main plaza (Plaza del Sol) on March 20, in which attendees are welcome to participate, regardless of their age or skill level. The most advanced students will receive an award during this event.
Important capoeira instructors, such as Sereia (Jennifer Walsh) and Alma de Gato (Luis Andre Diaz) are expected to participate. To learn more about the event, please visit abadacapoeiranayarit.blogspot.com.
