The Vallarta Yacht Club is soon to be hosting the International Optimist Dinghy Association (IODA) North American Championships. Teams from 19 countries will meet in Nuevo Vallarta. The North American Championships, called “OptiNAM”, is one of the most important regattas in the world for this class.
This regatta—comprising three separate championships—is an incredible opportunity to experience the highest level of Optimist (a small, single-handed sailing dinghy intended for use by children up to the age of 15) racing, and to see some of the best young athletes, all as part of a festive environment. This event is especially interesting for those involved with sailing and other water sports.
The official arrival for practice and measurement is July 9, followed by six days of racing, which begins July 11. Country teams will start arriving July 4. Sailors are supported by families and coaches, who will be making a vacation of the event and enjoy Mexican hospitality at beautiful Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta destinations.
The Vallarta Yacht Club is known to be a great organizer of world-class regattas. VYC was chosen as the host for the Pan-American Games in 2011, Copa Mexico, and various signature national and international events. OptiNAM 2014 includes 19 participating countries, 176 boats with 227 sailors and coaches participating in the event. Supporting the event will be over 50 race management personnel ashore and on-the-water, and will include members of the International Optimist Dinghy Association, the Mexican Sailing Federation, the Mexican Optimist Association, the Eighth Naval District and the Vallarta Yacht Club.
Countries represented in the competition include: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Japan, Netherlands Antilles, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Switzerland, United States, and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and Mexico. Following the North American and the concurrent European Championships will be the Optimist World Championship to be held in San Isidro, Argentina this coming October.
The young sailors competing in OptiNAM 2014 are the best, most rapidly developed and most talented young worldwide sailors. Many of them will very likely be the next Olympic champions. The Optimist is one of the most popular sailing dinghies in the world, with over 150,000 boats officially registered with the class.
