Tostada means "toasted" in Spanish and it refers to a flat shaped corn tortilla–toasted or deep-fried–or a mexican dish that uses a tostada as a base. On its own it is a companion for different kinds of mexican food but a popular way to eat tostadas in Mexico is as a dish of its own, topped with meat (pork or chicken), beans, cheese, sour cream, chopped lettuce, sliced onions and salsa. Tostadas are also popular topped with seafood, such as cooked tuna, shrimp, crab, chopped octopus and ceviche.
