The first art exhibitions mounted in Puerto Vallarta can be traced back to the 1950s. Ever since then, Puerto Vallarta has been a haven for national and international artists, who are consistently drawn to our destination for inspiration. It is no surprise, then, that a large number of art galleries have established locally, turning Puerto Vallarta into an ideal place for art lovers to explore.
Whether you are a seasoned connoisseur and art collector, or you simply wish to acquaint yourself with the broad variety of art available for purchase, chances are you will find something that fits your style and budget to take home as a treasured memory of your visit to Puerto Vallarta.
Most of the art galleries in Puerto Vallarta are located in El Centro, within a 12 x 4 block grid. As such, it is very easy to explore them by foot. An increasing number of galleries have set foot nearby, in Emiliano Zapata. Several communities near Puerto Vallarta, such as Bucerias, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Punta de Mita, Sayulita and San Pancho, also feature a number of art galleries.
The variety of art displayed at local galleries is as diverse as the artists themselves, from museum quality works to those created by new and emerging artists, not to mention exquisite Mexican folk art from may regions of Mexico. Many galleries offer a cross section of works, large and small, in different media, while a few specialize in media (photography, sculpture, etc.) or origin (Mexican art only).
Many of the artists represented locally live in the area full- or part-time, providing collectors with ample opportunities to meet them personally, usually facilitated by the galleries in the form of cocktails or receptions. Some artists schedule time to work on their galleries from time to time, giving visitors the intriguing pleasure of watching them as they work.
The Historic Center Art Walk takes place in Puerto Vallarta every Wednesday evening during the Winter and Spring months, providing visitors the opportunity to engage in a self-guided walking tour through a dozen or-so galleries in Puerto Vallarta's El Centro.
In a similar fashion, the Southside Shuffle takes place in Emiliano Zapata's popular Basilio Badillo Street, and surrounding areas, every other Friday evening during the Winter and Spring months. Several art galleries, along with gift shops and restaurants, participate in this event.
There is a weekly, guided Malecón Sculpture Tour that takes place during the Winter and Spring months.
Other communities that feature ongoing art-related events are San Pancho and Bucerias.
