Water-Related Activities
Puerto Vallarta sits in the middle of one of the largest natural bays in the world. Needless to say, the choices to enjoy our privileged location from the water are plentiful. From a relaxing bay cruise to an exhilarating up-close and personal encounter with whales, you may need to schedule a return trip to Vallarta just to be able to take in all its majesty!
Scuba & Snorkel in Banderas Bay: Banderas Bay is a rich and diverse ecosystem providing incredible underwater vistas and opportunities to explore underwater drop-offs, caves and arches, encountering giant manta rays, schools of dolphins and tropical marine life along the way. As such, the bay delivers perfect scuba diving conditions and a waltz of diving opportunities.
Wildlife Encounters: Given Puerto Vallarta's tropical location, enjoying up-close and personal encounters with wildlife is not only inevitable; it is an invitation, and an opportunity you should not miss while visiting Banderas Bay. There are plenty of opportunities for young and old to marvel at the vast variety of species you will encounter here.
Surfing and Paddleboarding: With several prime locations in the northern side of Banderas Bay and points beyond in Riviera Nayarit, Puerto Vallarta has long been a choice destination for surfers, worldwide. Point breaks, reef breaks and sand bars provide all types of swells, from glassy tubes and barrels for the hardcore longboard surfer, and gentle, soft-breaking swells, ideal for beginners.
Go Fishing in Banderas Bay: Banderas Bay and the surrounding waters of the Pacific teem with sea life, providing some of the best sport fishing in the world, including dorado (mahi-mahi) sailfish, wahoo, giant tuna and monster marlin. A number of activity providers welcome you to the bay with boats and fishing trips customized to meet nearly everyone's needs and budget.
Take a Bay Cruise: A unique way to take in the breadth of views and destinations is by taking a boat cruise throughout the bay. Daytime or evening, large or small, there are options for everyone, from families with children to singles. Bay cruises allow visitors to enjoy the view of our destination from a completely different angle, along with the opportunity to encounter marine wildlife.
Whale Watching: From November to April, Banderas Bay becomes the winter home and birthing ground for numerous humpback whales. Humpbacks are known for their acrobatic leaps and their unique “song,” which includes sounds such as grunts and squeaks. Watching a 40-ton creature leap almost completely out of the water is an experience that cannot be forgotten.
